The Project: The home was an original 70’s style home. It was worn out and in need of an update. The bedrooms were dull and had no built in robes. The kitchen was small there was only one bathroom and internal lighting was poor with inadequate windows. The outside entertaining area was difficult to access through a small side door and as such not used regularly. A freestanding fibro garage was down at the rear of the block.

Client Wanted: The client had several discussions with the Designer to create a workable plan. Major consideration was put towards the use of natural light inside the home as well as the everyday flow of the space within the home.

Our Solution: An extension to the rear of the home and the removal of some internal walls to create space for an en suite. Install a new larger kitchen plus laundry and create a larger dining space to open up the living areas to link with the entertaining area at the rear of the home.

The Result: The end result is a fresh open look for the home. Areas flow easily and invite you to enter. The kitchen is now the centre of the living areas and overlooks the rear garden. Built in robes were installed in all bedrooms, a computer nook was created and a new laundry. New windows were installed in several areas of the home to give a light open feel. The existing bathroom was totally renovated creating a modern open look and feel. A new double garage created adjacent to the front of the home opens up to the side yard. The client had a lot of input into the decision making process and was happily involved in labouring, painting and landscaping.

Full Home Renovations

My husband and I purchased our home whilst holidaying overeas. Downsizing from a larger home, we were attracted to the home because of its location to the Jetty area, and its potential. I sent three emails to local builders, and Dave was the only one to go around to the house within days of receiving the email and looking at our suggestions for future renovations. Emails continued, and we met Dave within days of returning home. He introduced us to a designer who fined tuned our ideas and plans submitted to council. Our stipulation for family reasons was to have the house liveable by March. It was late October. On paper an ensuite, a few walls removed, bathrooms update and a small extension to open up the rear of the property all seemed simple. We in fact were creating a brand new home, with new roofing, electrical and plumbing. December arrived and work started on the front section. Until Christmas we lived in the house around the tradesman, and then moved in with friends for 3 months.

Worked commenced at a frantic pace after Christmas, and there was never a day when Gianni, his foreman and boys were not on site. Dave's experience ensured that all the contract tradesman were there when the next job was ready to start. At one stage, you could look straight from the front of the house to the back! Daunting for us, but the boys knew their craft and suddenly everything was coming together and we could see how it would all fit. My husband was happy to do all the odd jobs such as taking the rubbish to the tip and we both started painting.

March arrived and suddenly we were moving in furniture, whilst the tilers were finishing off and kitchen being fitted, ready for our overseas family to arrive. By choice we decided to complete the building of the double garage at the front in June, and once again all was ready for a prompt start and tradesman ready to complete the work.

We cannot speak more highly of Dave Houston and his staff. Dave ensured by his expertise as a builder that the job was completed with our utmost satisfaction, his attention to detail, and on time. He communicated with us on a regular basis and with Gianni and boys we continually chatted out the 101 little things that come up. We have a home that we love, and would recommend Houston Constructions for all renovations large or small.
